Skateboard Wheels - Choose the Right One for Your Ride
The wheels on your skateboard are crucial to your riding experience and play a central role in both speed and stability. Choosing the right wheels can improve your performance, whether you're riding on the streets or in a skate park. Here we go through what you need to know to choose the best wheels for your particular skateboard.
Wheel Size
Skateboard wheels come in different sizes, with the most common size for trick skateboards being 50mm to 55mm in diameter. Here is a short guide:
- 50mm to 52mm : Perfect for street riding and tricks. Gives quick response and makes it easier to do flip tricks.
- 53mm to 55mm : A good compromise between stability and maneuverability. Ideal for both street and park riding.
- 56mm and larger : Best for ramps and bowling. These wheels provide more stability and speed.
Wheel Hardness
Wheel hardness is measured in durometer, and there are two main categories:
- Soft wheels (78A-87A) : Provides better grip and comfort on uneven surfaces, making them perfect for cruising and street riding. They are also more gentle on landings.
- Hard wheels (88A-101A) : Best suited for trick riding and skateparks, where fast turns and less rolling resistance are important. They are less likely to deform and offer more speed.
Ball bearings
The wheels come with two ball bearings that allow them to spin freely. Ball bearings are sensitive to moisture, so it's important to avoid using your skateboard in the rain or leaving it outside overnight to extend its life.
